People Culture and Contemporary Leadership for Organisation
Question: Discuss about thePeople Culture and Contemporary Leadership for Organisation. Answer: Introduction A Clear Introduction Defining Scope The purpose of this reflective essay is to assess about the leadership and its relevance in the organisation. There are various types of perspective of the leadership that leaders can understand and apply them to the business organization to achieve the goal and objectives of the company (Gardner, Cogliser, Davis, and Dickens, 2011). Leadership has its own impact on the company. The leaders are the individuals who participate in various kinds of activities and let other participate in the same to achieve organizational goals and objectives. The purpose of this essay is to cover all the aspects that a leader should have to encourage others. There are various kinds of improvement are also required in the leadership styles and theories to bring changes. The aim of this essay to discuss on what type of leader I am and what kind of changes i have to make to bring improvement so that I can become more effective and efficient leader in future. The assessment includes various types of experience take place in my journey of becoming a leader. They can be related to life experience, examples f others, etc. basically, the motive is to share my own feelings, views, and ideas related to the leadership. Leadership The scope of this reflective essay is briefly understood about the leaders, appropriate theories of leadership, and approaches of the same (Gardner, Lowe, Moss, Mahoney, and Cogliser, 2010). According to me the scope of leadership lies in the command, control a coaching of the employees, enable them to perform better, reporting, motivate and inspire so that the goals and objective can be archived not only organization but also personal goals. A Brief Discussion of what Leadership is Including Appropriate Theory of the Same There are various types of theories of leadership that help the leaders to manage the organization in a better way. These types of theories include the vision of the company, mission, objective, motivation to the employees, etc. Various Types of Leadership Theories Trait Theory This theory of leadership states that the leaders are born and not made. This theory has three types of assumptions that are leaders are born not made. The second assumption says that there are certain traits that are found in the leaders who fit them into the brackets of leadership (Bennis, 2007). The third assumption states that some people are born with perfect combination of all the leadership qualities and traits. According to this trait theory, the traits that must be found in leader are self-confidence, integrity, intelligence, determination and sociability. I have observed and reviewed that there are certain traits that are directly or indirectly related to the leadership traits like effectiveness in the work, a level of energy that is high, tolerance of stress, and many other qualities (Day, Fleenor, Atwater, Sturm, and McKee, 2014). I also found that the leaders are self efficient and find their self-esteem by taking right decisions. They make wise decisions, provide direction, control the actions, and bring stability, emotional support, maturity and internal integrity between the employees. Behavioural Theory The other theory of leadership is behavioral theory that assumes that the styles and traits of the leadership can be learned and achieved as they are not intrinsic in nature. The behaviour theory of leadership styles that any individual can lead by learning the theories and traits of the leadership that can be done through practical experience, critical situations, and specific circumstances (Dinh, Lord, Gardner, Meuser, Liden, R.C. and Hu, 2014). The focus of this theory is on the behavior of the leaders that oppose that leaders are not made instead they are created or self crate due to the situations and past experiences. The success of the leaders is definable if they follow a certain path and success stories of the other successful leaders. In this theory, the people are recognized or what they have learnt in their life and how they have become the leader. They share their experiences so that the other individuals can be motivated (Eagly, 2007). This theory also promotes the styles of the leadership and emphasize on the morals and the values by paying attention to them and listening to their ideas, views and decisions. This process helps to promote a sense of self engagement, development and support in the decision making and achieving the individual as well as team and groups needs. The major focus of this theory is on the behaviour of the leader towards the organization, employees and other members related to the same (Mendenhall, 2012). It also focuses on the reactions and the actions of the leaders in certain circumstances. The act of the leaders defines their personality and traits which defines them infront of their followers. Contingency Theory This theory do not defines as the style of the leadership but they are the properties that make the leader t face difficulties and challenging situations. According to this theory, all the situation are unique and in that sense the leaders also have to perform uniquely in those unique situations (Piwowar, Becich, Bilofsky, and Crowley, 2008). There are various types of contingency theory like Fiedlers contingency theory Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory Path-Goal Theory Fiedlers contingency theory According to these theories, the leaders do not have any perfect style to handle the situation. They exceed for the basic style and bring some new and unique style that will be followed by the other individuals. There is a need to establish good relations between the people who are working in a company to have effective implementation of the leadership (Bass, and Bass, 2009). In short, it is ad that the effectiveness and efficiency of leaders depends on the group and type of people. Situational Leadership Theory This theory depends on the situations and circumstances and not on a single style of leadership style. Situational leadership theory has two types of dimensions one is leadership style and also the maturity of the people who can lead. In this way, the situational theory is all about the leadership and their willing to adapt the styles of the other successful leaders (Finkelstein, Hambrick, and Cannella, 2009). It is directly related to the success stories of the prominent leaders who have done great job to achieve the win-win situation in certain circumstances. The leaders are responsible to manage the followers to take decision their behalf (Perry, and Hondeghem, 2008). They monitor the performance of the employees and their progress. Path Goal Theory The path goal theory states that the leaders are required to manage and assist the employees who are the followers so that the future goals of the company as well as of employees can be attained. In order to achieve the leaders motivate, direct, support and control the actions of the employees (Scullion, and Collings, 2011). According to this theory there are four leadership theory that is directive leadership theory, supportive theory, participative theory and achievement oriented leadership. A Discussion on Class Activity and what does it Mean for as a Leader There was an activity where the entire class is divided into two teams who have to collect money to donate to the people who suffering from cancer. There was a nonprofit organization visited our college and appointed a representative from each class who has to coordinate the entire program (Avolio, Walumbwa, and Weber, 2009). I seriously reconciled many insightful reviews. My teachers said that the team handled by me collected the maximum amount out of all, the teams and my teams led the highest performance among all. Some of them said that this is because of my high directive coercive approach and this approach is opposed of the team members who followed me. There is a point of time when the followers become more relevant than the leaders and if leaders ignore his or her followers than they themselves are responsible for the same. As a leader, it is very relevant to make the followers know that there are certain differences between them and the leaders. In my views, leadership is something in which the people themselves desire to work with you and follow you. In order to increase the followers, a leader, cannot force any one to follow as is a volunteer activity. By showcasing certain qualities, skills, knowledge, characteristic, and many other qualities, a leader let the followers to follow him. The autocratic leadership is not negative in nature but it becomes negative when it is highly used and overused. When the leaders make their leadership as strength then it becomes worst. There should be a balance in the leadership styles adopted. There are is need to work on this. To be a perfect leader, the possibility is that there is a requirement to learn and adapt my own style so that the situations can be handled. The literature review of leaders also mentioned that the same thing as discussed above that the best kind of leadership is when the leaders make decision according to the situations. So we can conclude that the leaders can be made or born. Reflection of my own Views on Leadership A Clear Articulation of what my on Development area are The first question that stuck in my mind was that: are leaders are born or made? This is the question that made me curious to know the answer for the same. At initial point, i felt that leader can't be born as there are many leaders who were made and there are reasons due to which they have to develop certain traits that turned them into a leader. Though, this is a kind of skill that cannot be taught (Limsila, and Ogunlana, 2008). It is self developing skills that develop and creates in certain situations. Once I got a chance to become a monitor of my class. And that was the first experience when I acted like a monitor. I played a leading role and also fulfill all the requirement of being a monitor. Form that day onwards, I realized that it feels great to be charged and to make decision on others behalf for the sake of others and keeping kindness in mind. That was the day, when I realized that leadership can be created but it requires some skills that must be present in the individual (Hackman, and Wageman, 2007). After that I got many chances where I polished my leadership qualities and practice all my traits as my strength in real life. I learn gradually and develop the leadership skills in myself. In initial day, I recall being little heavy handed because its not too easy t handle the human beings who are very unpredictable and spontaneous in nature. It is the universal truth that no theory is universal tat applicable on human being. There are various types of leadership styles that are practiced in organization depending on the nature and requirement of the same like autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire, etc. (Vries, Bakker-Pieper, and Oostenveld, 2010) According to me, the leadership style that is adopted by me is democratic leadership style which is the most suitable and balanced style of leadership. I strongly believe that this leadership style is based on help and assets the people and not to order them. It considers the needs and requirements of the employees as well as for the organization. Though, many scholars have mentioned that this leadership style is negative in nature and cannot applicable and suitable for all the organization. There are situations when the leaders have to be little strict and rigid with their followers and employees. In such cases, the leaders have to make decisions by their own without consulting them with others. They also said that such leadership style is beneficial where the followers and the employees need a full need of the manager or a coach to guide them. The requirement of developing your own skills and knowledge related to the leadership is because it is the best to apply and the results come will also shows effectiveness and efficiency of the leaders. The development of leadership skills takes place gradually with time and practice (Klenke, 2016). There are number of ways and experience that help the leaders in making the right decisions. The leaders are motivated by the results that come out after their efforts and hard work. Conclusion To conclude for the present study, I can say that it is very relevant for a leader to apply the best theories and practices in the given situation. It is the only way though which effectiveness can be gained in the organization. The reflective essay has discussed many theories, approaches and my own experience that will help to learn the best practices take place in leadership.
